2 Factors that make a Night Terror Different from a Nightmare.

  1. Night Terrors Do Not Happen In REM Sleep – One of the critical differences between nightmares and night terrors is where in the sleep cycle, these parasomnias occur. The sleep cycle is divided up into four stages, the most restful one being the last stage, called Rapid-Eye movement (REM) sleep. Nightmares usually occur during REM sleep, while night terrors crop up within the earlier stages of sleep. Because of their occurrence within the REM stage, nightmares tend to happen either late at night or in the early-morning hours in synchronicity with when the subject enters REM sleep.
  2. Night Terror Patients Cannot Recall Their Experience – Another critical difference between night terrors and nightmares is the ability to recall. While many people try to forget their horrors, a few patients still recall them a long time after they occurred. Usually, when a person awakes from a nightmare, they vividly remember the most disturbing parts of it, and sometimes want to talk about the dream to calm themselves down. Night terrors are distinctly different in comparison, with patients shouting, screaming, or even sleepwalking while the night terrors are happening. Those who wake up after the fact are disoriented and can’t recall much about the experience, aside from the feeling of abject terror.
